OM 654 – premium class diesel

Mercedes-Benz is currently investing in its most recent engine development programme, and the list of new designs includes a uniquely environment friendly diesel units, and a new engine, OM 654, among others. Compact, light and efficient – the new four-cylinder engine reveals the potential which still lies in diesel units. The combination of a new, aluminium crankcase, cylinder head made of high-strength aluminium and plastic engine mounts, allowed to reduce the weight of the unit to 46kg.

OM 654 is also the first diesel engine for passenger cars which uses pistons with a stepped combustion bowl developed by Mercedes-Benz. Since elements of exhaust gas treatment are installed directly next to the engine, OM 654 unit already meets the more restrictive EU exhaust emission standards, which take into account both laboratory and actual fuel consumption values.
